Carol Whitaker was the last artist to be featured at John L Scott in 2026. John L Scott will return to ArtWalk in May 2027.

Carol is a process-based artist who uses elements and principals of art* to construct her pieces. Each of Carol’s abstract paintings is a unique expression of her ideas, experiences, or visual curiosity. Carol uses a variety of unorthodox tools, including sticks, spatulas, and sponges, to build her paintings from mark to mark, meaning that the beginning does not always suggest the end. Carol paints with emotion and hopes to inspire an emotional response.

Carol began painting in retirement after several fortuitous encounters with artists and art teachers. Prior to painting, Carol was most drawn to photography and crafts. Aspects of those media influence her painting. Carol had many art and art literacy opportunities throughout school that allowed her to confidently follow her curiosity when she discovered painting as a way to communicate.

Before becoming a painter, Carol practiced law for more than a decade and volunteered for close to two decades as a tutor and mentor. Carol is an active member of the Mercer Island Visual Arts League (MIVAL), an artists’ non￾profit, where she shows her art on a regular basis and works to support art in the community.
